TaylorMade has been producing various versions of the Burner since 1983 (Burner Plus in 1986; Burner Bubble in 1995) and the 2007 Burner is one of their best selling drivers for the 2007 and 2008 years. The Tour Burner, released in 2008, was used by Sergio Garcia when he won the 2008 Player’s Championship and it is used by more players on the PGA tour than any other driver.
Taylor Made’s SuperFast technology was introduced with the 2007 version of the Burner. This is marketing speak for added length, an extra light 50-gram shaft and an extra light 42-gram grip to encourage high swing speed – the faster the driver is swung, the further the ball is launched. The 2008 Tour Burner driver contained Dual Crown technology which reduced the clubhead while at the same time increasing the base size to lower the club’s center of gravity. This means the ball is launched at a higher angle with less spin.
The 2008 Burner driver blends the SuperFast and Dual Crown technologies to produce a club with a high swing speed and which launches the ball at a high angle with minimal spin. The result is a driver that is easy to swing and gives tremendous distance off the tee.
The Burner 460cc titanium clubhead has Inverted Cone Technology. This changes the way the clubface behaves on impact so that a larger area of the face imparts speed on the ball, ensuring that even an off center shot can be struck at long way. Also, the shape, weighting and shape of the clubhead means that it has high moment of inertia (MOI) to ensure that it will twist less with off center strikes.
The driver has a lightweight grip and a SuperFast RE*AX® 49-gram graphite shaft in X, S, R, M and L flexes. The Burner’s lofts are 9.5, 10.5 or High Trajectory. Both right-handed and left-handed versions are available for men, with only a right-handed versions available for women.
TaylorMade has also produced the Burner TP (Tour Preferred) driver for better or touring players. The clubface on the Burner TP is slight more open and has a SuperFast 55- or 65-gram graphite shafts in X, S and R flexes. The driver’s lofts are 8.5, 9.5 or 10.5. Versions are only produced for men in right or left-handed.
