The original Callaway Big Bertha War Bird was released in 1991 and the large chunk of metal was a sensational hit. The most recent addition of the Big Bertha is the Callaway Big Bertha Diablo driver. With an all titanium head, lightweight body and generous sweet spot ensures that the golf driver is built for club speed and distance. While it isn’t the best looking golf driver on the market, it has a reputation as a higher performer in terms of distance and accuracy.
The Big Berth Diablo incorporates Edge Technology and a unique shaping of the all titanium clubhead so that the center of gravity location is optimized for Draw or Neutral options and a high momentum of inertia (MOI). This also assists the player to keep the clubface closed when striking the ball, leading to more power at impact.
Hyperbolic Face Technology – which combines mathematics and engineering - and the ultra-stable head work together to ensure faster ball speed across a large section of the face. This translates into further distance even on off-center hits. In fact, compared to all of Callaway’s previous golf drivers, this driver has the highest ever ball speed across the entire face.
In addition to the hyperbolic face, the club head also incorporates the thinnest ever crown produced by Callaway – 0.027”. This frees weight for use in an internal chip in the sole.
In summary, the Callaway Big Berth Diablo golf driver is designed for power and distance. Many players report that is the one of the easiest and longest drivers they have used. Beyond the looks, this is one driver that delivers on its promises and players of all skill levels will enjoy it ease of use.
The club head is 460 cc and the lofts are 8, 9, 10, 11 and 13 HTD degrees. The length is 45 inches. The shaft is from Aldila and is available in light, regular and stiff.
What the Company Says:
"Previous Big Bertha drivers target golfers who need the most help with their game. Big Bertha Diablo differs because its performance is optimized for a broad range of golfers, including those of the highest ability. Its new body shape is functional and dynamic." - Dr. Alan Hocknell, VP of Innovation and Advanced Design.
What Others Say:

......................................................................................................................
The Adams Speedline Driver signals fundamental change in golf driver technology. Manufactures have previously focused on increasing the momentum of inertia (MOI) for improved club head stability and straighter distance. This has tended to push designs towards more square and boxy shaped club heads. But Adams believes that such square designs cause a loss of club head speed due to the increased drag - less speed, less distance off the tee.
Enter the Adams Speedline Driver. Utilizing the Low Speed Wind Tunnel at Texas A&M University and the brains of some aero-physicists, this driver has been developed using aerodynamic scientific principles. The result is a club head which creates less drag and airflow turbulence, thereby increasing club head speed and distance. The data has shown that the Adams Speedline produces three to four M.P.H. faster club head speed and three to nine yards more distance.
There are three aerodynamic features. The first is the Improved Crown Shaping which gives the club’s profile a dome-like shape. Heel and Toe Scoops mean that parts of the heel and toe have been removed and shaped to improve the airflow over the head – just like those scoops seen on racing cars and jets. Similarly, the club’s face has been optimized for air flow.
Not everyone will be excited by the blue color and graphics, nor the head shape. Others however, love the very aerodynamic and classic driver looks.
All in all, the Adams Speedline Driver suits a player who wants longer distance with their drivers. The sound at the strike is impressive and this golf driver is definitely a performer. One negative however, is that some MOI has been sacrificed because of the design.
There is also am Adams Speedline Draw driver model which is designed to optimize distance for the recreational player. This draw-biased driver has a slightly closed clubface that assists the player in squaring the club at impact and helping to eliminate a slice.
The driver’s head is 460cc titanium. It comes in lofts of 8.5, 9.5, 10.5, 12.5 and HT. The shaft is a 60-gram Grafalloy Prolaunch AXIS Blue made from graphite and available in A, R, S, X. The length is 46 inches.
What the Company Says:
"We sorted through reams of data showing that 'large footprint' drivers create drag and slower clubhead speed. So we set out to design a superior driver that's aerodynamically shaped. We developed the Speedline through wind-tunnel testing and computational fluid dynamics. The result is 50 percent less drag and more distance because of the increased clubhead speed." - Scott Burnett, Director of advanced product development
What Others Say:
“Just flat-out bombs it. The head shape is different but not distracting." – Golf Digest
"Beautiful at address...great results and a real winner." – Today’s Golfer
“It produced great results for us and is a real winner for both its visual appeal and overall performance.” – Golf Monthly

......................................................................................................................
In recent times, Titleist has been criticised for producing golf drivers that have been somewhat unexciting and dreary. However, their most recent 909 range has been herald a much needed improvement and hopefully indicates a return to form for the company.
The 909 range consists of three drivers: the 909DComp, 909D2 and 909D3. As with most of Titleist’s products, the Titleist 909 range is made with Tour players and more serious players in mind. These clubs are really for better players with up to a 15 handicap.
Lets take a look at what these drivers have in common before focusing on the 909 D Comp exclusively.
The SureFit swingweight screw is a factory installed balance weight which places the center of gravity deep in the clubhead and ensures that the swingweight can be kept at an appropriate level with various lengths and shafts. The tuned soles of the drivers have optimized pockets and an internal rib to reduce vibration, improve the acoustics and ensure a solid feel. An integrated titanium blind bore hosel design saves weight, provides solid feel, and allows for more shaft options. Each driver has a CNC-milled trapezoid face insert that is thickest in the middle and thinner around the perimeter – this maximizes ball speed cross more of the face. And finally, the integral Titanium blind bore hosel saves on weight and allows more shaft options.
The Titeist 909 D Comp is designed to fit the top 20% of players – from those on Tour to serious aspiring golfers. It differs from the others in the range by having a full pear shaped and 460cc titanium and composite head. Eighteen grams of titanium have been replaced with composite material to allow a bigger profile, higher MOI and to ensure that the center of gravity is place deeply into the clubhead.
It is driver designed to produce high launch and low to mid spin conditions. In comparison to the other 909 golf drivers, the 909DComp offers much more forgiveness and a higher launch angle.
The clubhead is 460cc and the lofts are 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 and 11.5 degrees. The length is 45 inches. The shaft is Matrix Ozik XCon-5 and XCon-6,
What the Company Says:
"The composite crown allows us to lower the center of gravity (CG) without increasing backspin. 909 DComp delivers high launch with low to mid spin." - Dan Stone, VP of R&D
What Others Say:
"I can't believe this is a Titleist. Incredible distance, soaring ball flight." – Golf Digest
"One of the most playable Titleist drivers ever...powerful." – Golf Monthly

Most of Titleist’s golf equipment is designed for Tour players, serious players and aspiring serious players with 10-15 handicap. Even amongst such better players, each golfer has different swing characteristics. The Titleist 909D2 and D3 golf drivers are designed to match different swing styles and players’ preferences in regards to ball flight and trajectory.
Both drivers have a number of features in common. Each driver has a CNC-milled trapezoid face insert that is thickest in the middle and thinner around the perimeter – this maximizes ball speed cross more of the face. And finally, the integral Titanium blind bore hosel saves on weight and allows more shaft options.
How do the two drivers differ?
The Titleiest 909D2 has a 460cc, full pear clubhead constructed from titanium. It is designed to produce high launch and low to mid spin launch conditions.
The Titleiest 909D3 is smaller at 440cc and has a classic pear profile constructed from titanium. It is designed to produce a medium launch angle with mid to low spin.
The D2 has a deep center of gavity and the D3 a low center of gavity. With the center of gavity positioned more forwarded, the D3 is designed to offer more workability whether it is left or right, or high or low. The shallower face in the D2 is designed to improve forgiveness.
What the Company Says:
"Our driver development research indicates a significant variation in players' swing speeds and attack angles when delivering the club to impact. We designed three distinct 909 drivers (nb: the Titeliest 909DComp is reviewed elsewhere) to meet the different launch requirements and maximize distance across our entire target audience. The 909 D2 delivers mid launch with low- to mid-spin." - Dan Stone, VP of R&D.
What Others Say:
"Everything is consistently positive about this club." – Golf Digest
"Classic look and feel...decent forgivness...improves accuracy, distance." – Golf Monthly (D2)
"Looks small but lack of yardage compensated by control." – Golf Monthly (D3)

Adams Insight Tech A4 Driver $369.95 new In the Hole Golf |
Adams is an emerging name in golf drivers, after being an industry leader with their irons and fairway woods. The Adams Insight Tech A4 driver is one of two new drivers that the company has introduced in the last year. Since its introduction 12 months ago, the Insight Tech A4 has been receiving many positive comments from those on the Tour.
The Adams Insight Tech A4 driver is designed by Scott Burnett formerly of Titleist and TaylorMade. During its development, Adams spent a year gathering input and feedback from top PGA players and the American Long Drivers Association.
The result is a tear shaped golf driver that is designed for low spin and high launch to increase carry distance and roll – in other words, this driver is made for lots of distance. The 15-gram external weight pad repositions the mass low and back for optimal launch conditions, and the tear shaped driver head produces much better sound, workability and great looks. An increased face height toward the toe results in a more consistent club face alignment and the curved sole is designed to maintain structural strength and save weight.
The main criticism of the driver is that despite it having 46 custom shafts there is no true fitting system.
The Adams Insight Tech A4 features a 460 cc titanium clubhead. The length is 45.4 inches. The shaft is a Matrix Ozik with flexes of R, S and X. Lofts are 8.5, 9.5 and 10.5 degrees.
What the Company Says:
“Well–struck balls jump off the face of this driver with frightening speed. Even mis–hits fly much longer than expected." – Bernhard Langer
What Others Are Saying:
"One of the longest I've hit. The ball just flies off the face, but the head rolls too much at setup; it doesn't seem to sit flat." – Golf Digest
