Mizuno MX-700 Driver

| Dec 13, 2009

Mizuno hasn’t had the best reputation for golf drivers in the past but the Mizuno MX-700 driver signals a new attempt to establish the company as well regard producer of drivers. It is the successor to the MX-500 and sees the sound improved from the previous generation and a streamlined club head.

The MX-700 has the lowest, deepest center of gravity and highest moment of inertia of any Mizuno driver. The result is high, penetrating trajectory and low spin making this club a very forgiving golf driver with plenty of distance and consistency.

The main selling point of this driver is the Ti0 Hot Metal technology. This means that a Ti-9 titanium clubface is combined with a 6-4 titanium body. It is this face design which enables faster ball speed across the entire face for further distance on off-centre strikes in comparison to the previous MX-500 model.

The weight saved by the Ti9 Hot Metal technology enables a broad and wide geometry which places the centre of gravity low and deep. The sweet spot is also placed in a central location for better vertical stability. This all combines to produce the low spin and high, penetrating ball flight.

In contrast to the MX-500’s strange high-pitched sound, the MX-700 has a vibration dampening internal hull to give a powerful sounding ‘thump’ and improved feel.

The end result is a driver that is easy to hit, even for players with high handicaps. It is best suited to those who lose serious distance to slight mishits or players who want a high-tech driver with plenty of forgiveness.

The club head is 460cc. The lofts are 9.5, 10.5, 12 and 13.5. The length is 45.5 inches. The shaft is a Exsar DS4 with flexes of LL, L, LT, R and S.

What the Company Says:

"All the game improvement drivers out there have high MOI and COR to the [rules] limit. We take these elements to the extreme with revolutionary Ti-9 titanium that comprises the 'Hot Metal' face. You’ll never hit it longer or straighter." - Masao Nagai, global director of R&D.

What Others are Saying:

“While the head of the Mizuno MX-700 driver looks huge at address the graphics on the crown and the shape work brilliantly together. It felt extremely solid on every shot-something which is helped by the improved impact sound.” – Golf Monthly

"This is just a cannon, deadly long, and it looks very comfortable at address.” – Golf Digest

"Stunning performance...long, booming drives...is a fantastic package." – Today’s Golfer

Compared to previous Cobra golf drivers, the Cobra S9-1 driver is stouter from face to rear, is narrower from bottom to top and has an overall traditional club head shape. The profile has 5 percent less surface area to ensure a larger hitting area but lighter weight than previous Cobra drivers. The face shape is designed with a 1:1 length to width ratio which means that there is better energy transfer from the face to golf ball.

The main selling point of the Cobra S9-1 driver is that is has not one sweet spot but nine. This is achieved by integrating Cobra’s Hotter 9 Points technology and these 9 different points ensures a larger effective hitting area. Incorporated with the Hotter 9 Points technology is a Milled Dual rhombus Face Insert that produces higher speeds across the face, even on miss-hits.

The internal crown rib geometry means that internal ribs have been placed behind the driver’s face for great sound on contact with the ball. The traditional club head shape also means that this is a great looking golf driver.

Overall, the Cobra S9-1 driver is a great fit for golfers looking for forgiveness on off-center hits, consistent distance and accuracy. There are several different versions to suit different players and these are outlined below.

The first versions are for better players - the Cobra S9-1 Pros S and Pro D. The Pro S is a shallow-faced driver designed for players with extreme ball speeds and produces conditions of high launch and low-to-mid spin for high ball flight. In contrast, the Pro S has a deeper face for mid-to-high launch and low spin for a lower, piercing ball flight.

The other models of S9-1 are tuned to suit the different swing speeds and biases of more average players. The F model is designed for players with a swing speed of 87-108 MPH and has a square face with a slight draw bias to produce conditions of high launch and low-to-mid spin. For players with swing speeds of 97 MPH or less, the M model is draw biased with high launch and mid spin. The M offset model is also for players with swing speeds of 97 MPH but has a greater draw bias and higher launch with mid spin.

There are also senior and womens models available.

The club head is 460cc all-titanium. For the Pro models, the lofts are 8.5, 9.5 and 10.5 degrees. For the F and M offset models the lofts are 9.5 and 10.5 degrees. For the M models the lofts are 10.5 and 11.5. For the seniors model the lofts are 11.5 and for the womens they are 11.5 and 13.5. The shafts and flexes vary from model to model

What the Company Says:

"We developed a new outer head shape and internal geometry for 'hotter 9-point' performance. Each model has a distinct center-of-gravity location to provide optimum ball-flight conditions for all player types and ball speeds. We also adjusted face geometry to maximize efficiency and ball speed across the face. Longer length [45.5"] and lighter overall weight [by 6 grams] mean higher ball speeds for all player types." - Josh Breier, Principal Design Lead Engineer.

What Others Say:

“The King Cobra S9-1 driver is a superb new offering that looks great and is extremely forgiving thanks to the deep-face design. The sound off the face is just right and it produced a high flight without too much spin on the ball.” – Golf Monthly

"Felt good. Pleasing launch and a solid, reassuring sound." – Golf International

“I had no slice whatsoever on any shot. Feels great and goes straight." – Golf Digest

......................................................................................................................

The Ping G5 was a market triumph. The G10 is the next generation and it makes some improvements on the G5. This includes faster ball speed, higher MOI and lower spin rates.

The 460cc titanium club head has a taller clubface that increases face flex. Both the clubface and crown are thinner making them lighter and the weight is repositioned lower and deeper in the club head. The crown, sole and face have been optimized using a Cray Supercomputer so that more energy is transferred to the ball.

As far as technology is concerned, that is it from the Ping G10. It is essentially a no frills golf driver that delivers excellent performance. This makes the G10 fantastic value and proves that well performing drivers don’t need to be flash. However, if you are searching for a golf driver with a detailed story of technology there are other offerings available.

If you are looking to upgrade from a G5 to G10 you may want to give it some careful consideration. Despite an improved look and more forgiveness, the G10 doesn’t substantially improve on the performance of the G5.

The club head is 460cc titanium. The lofts are 7.5, 9, 10.5, 12 and 13.5. The length is 45.75 inches. The shafts include TFC 129D, Grafalloy ProLaunch Red and UST v2 High Launch 65. A draw model is also available for those who tend to slice.

What the Company Says:

"We've engineered a lot of little improvements into the G10 driver which added up to significant performance gains. Golfers of all skill levels will see improvement in distance, accuracy and consistency.” - John K. Solheim, PING's Vice President of Engineering.

What Others Say:

"This is a '57 Les Paul Junior. Very solid and soft at the same time. Nothing about it says technology, but the results are amazing. A heck of a driver." – Golf Digest

"Stunning, an instant hit...phenomenoal distance and gorgeous looks." – Today’s Golfers

"Feels powerful...gets the ball out there...performed well." – Golf Monthly

.....................................................................................................................

The Cleveland Launcher 2009 is the next iteration of the Launcher line. The first impression is that it is the same as the other range of 460cc golf drivers on the market today. However, the 2009 version of the Launcher is 21 percent larger than the Launcher 460 and Launcher Comp, giving it a much larger effective hitting area and more forgiveness. The Launcher is also 0.5 inches longer than a normal driver at 45.5 inches.

The Launcher 2009 model has high MOI, medium trajectory and a very low spin rate. This means that this driver delivers a flatter trajectory than the Cleveland HiBore XLS Moster driver (which produces high-launch, high-flying trajectory). In comparison to the Cleveland HiBore XLS, the Launcher’s higher MOI makes it easier to work the ball and is therefore more for those skilled enough to do so.

The Cleveland Launcher model has an extremely thin crown of 0.5mm. This, and the exaggerated sloped crown, ensures that the weight is placed low and deep inside the club head for more forgiveness. The horseshoe-shaped, 17 gram weight is placed at the rear of the sole and assists in creating a higher launch, less spin and more stability when miss-hits are struck.

Cleveland has specifically targeted the sound at impact. The Launcher is solid and forceful, but with a more traditional, ear-pleasing pitch that is not overpowering.

The Launcher also comes with a Fujikura’s Flightspeed Fit-On shaft which is 10 grams lighter than previous shafts. The lighter shaft means faster swing speed (of up to 1.3 mph quicker) and therefore more yards down the fairway.

The club head is 460cc titanium and lofts are 9, 10.5 and 12 degrees. The length is 45.5 inches. The shaft is a Fujikura’s Flightspeed Fit-On with A, R, S and X.

What the Company Says:

"'Where tradition meets technology' is our battle cry in developing this driver. Launcher keeps classic design and high performance in harmony, from the original Launcher 330 to 400 to 460 to 460 Comp. This one is our best Launchers yet." - Steve Chien, VP of R&D

What Others Are Saying:

"Swings itself. Get it started, and the balance just allows it to get through impact on its own. Similar to a Momentus training aid, it won't let you swing off plane." – Golf Digest

“The impact noise and the feeling off the face is just right. Shots consistently flew long and it was easy to find the sweetspot on a regular basis.” – Golf Monthly

"Impressed...impressive stats...great value for a top club." - Today's Golfer

.....................................................................................................................

The Cleveland HiBore Monster XLS golf driver is the fourth iteration of the original HiBore which was released in 2006. At the time, the original HiBore’s new head design was a revolution. The new HiBore Monster XLS has a 16-percent larger face than the previous XLS model and this provides the largest hitting area produced by Cleveland.

The MOI is one of the highest ever measured  - in fact, is right on the USGA limit of 5900 - and ensures that the Monster driver is ultra-stable and extremely forgiving. This has been achieved by 24 grams of weight positioned in optimal areas on the perimeter. The high MOI ensures maximum ball speed at impact and improved accuracy and distance so that even off-center hits perform just as well as center contacts.

The raised face reduces the mass by 7 grams and helps move the weight lower and deeper in the club head. This aligns the weight optimally to create high launch and low spin at impact.

The one negative of the Cleveland HiBore Monster XLS is the sound – there is a very loud noise at impact. You may well think the ball has been fired by a cannon. This may or may not bother you, especially if you are more worried about the performance of the driver.

There are three versions of the Monster XLS – standard, draw and Tour. The standard model has a square face and neutral weight. The draw’s face is closed by 3 degrees, offset and has a draw weighting bias. The Tour has a smaller 440cc head, 2 degrees open face and fade weighting bias.

The head size (apart from the Tour model) is 460cc. The lofts are 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 and 11.5 degrees. The length is 45.5 inches. The standard shaft is a Fujikura Flightspeed Fit-On M Gold with flexes of A, R, S and X.

What the Company Says:

"This is our latest generation of modern and innovative design for maximum distance and control. Our goal is to reach maximum MOI while still enhancing distance. We accomplish our mission by utilizing maximum dimensions (5" x 5" USGA limit) for stability and forgiveness. A longer, lighter Fujikura shaft increases ball speed for more distance." - Steve Chien, VP of R&D.

What Others Say:

"Powerful look inspires confidence...impact noise is extremely loud." – Golf Monthly

“We say this driver is ‘scary long and straight’.” – Golf Tips Magazine

“The Cleveland HiBore Monster XLS Monster is exactly what it says on the tin - a monster off the tee!” – Today’s Golfer

"It goes straight and has just the right height, even if it's ugly. It's more solid-feeling than other drivers and is very forgiving. I like the loud sound." – Golf Digest
